OVERVIEW
The Health and Care Worker visa is a category of the UK’s Skilled Worker visa, designed specifically for medical professionals. This visa allows eligible healthcare professionals from outside the UK to come to or stay in the UK to work with an approved UK employer:
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
To qualify for a Health and Care Worker visa, applicants must:
- Have a valid Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from a UK-licensed sponsor
- Be a qualified doctor, nurse, health professional, or adult social care professional.
- Be paid a minimum salary of at least £23,200per year, or the “going rate” for the type of work you will be doing (whichever is higher).
Workers applying for a role that is not on a national pay scale will have to meet a general annual salary threshold of £29,000.
- Meet the required English language proficiency, which typically involves passing an approved English language test or having a relevant degree taught in English.
- Be able to provide a criminal record certificate from any country where you have lived for 12 months or more within the last ten years, if you will be working with vulnerable people as a healthcare professional.
Notes: Following a change in the law in March 2024, Health and Care Worker visa holders are no longer permitted to bring family members with them to the UK under the dependent visa route.

Health and care workers are exempt from the UK Immigration Health Surcharge.

Health and Care Worker visa applications benefit from fast-tracked processing as standard. As a result, the majority of healthcare professionals applying on this route can usually expect a decision on their application within 3 weeks from the date they provide their biometric information.
After Receiving the Visa
