OVERVIEW
An Australian Visitor Visa (subclass 600) allows individuals to visit Australia for tourism, business, or to visit family and friends. It is intended for short-term stays and typically allows a stay of up to 3, 6, or 12 months, depending on the purpose of the visit and the applicant’s circumstances.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Applicants must demonstrate that they have sufficient funds to cover their stay, a valid passport for 6 months , and a genuine intention to visit temporarily. They may also need to meet health and character requirements
HEALTH REQUIREMENTS
- If an applicant will be staying in Australia for 6 months or more, or special significance applies (e.g. entering hospital etc.) – both an x-ray and medical examination will be required
- If an applicant is visiting for less than 6 months – no health exams are required (including no chest x-rays)
- Over 75’s will still require medicals as part of the visa application process
Travel Insurance including medical cover is required when travelling. It must cover the duration of the requested visa.

PROCESSING TIMES & VISA RECEIPT
The processing time for an Australian Visitor Visa (subclass 600) for South African citizens can vary depending on the volume of applications being processed. On average:
- Tourist Stream: Processing can take between 20 to 45 days.
- Family-Sponsored Stream: Processing might take longer, typically around 50 to 60 days.
However, these times can vary, so it’s advisable to apply well in advance of your intended travel date, ideally a few months ahead, to allow for any potential delays.
