OVERVIEW
A Schengen Visa is a short-stay visa that allows a person to travel to any of the 27 Schengen Area member countries for tourism, business, or transit purposes. The Schengen Area is a zone in Europe where 27 countries have abolished their internal borders to allow free and unrestricted movement of people.
- Duration: The duration can vary from anything between your actual travel dates and 90 days within a 90 or 180 day period. Each visa validity is up to the discretion of the issuing authority
- Validity:
Single-Entry Visa: Permits you to enter a country only once during the visa’s validity period. Once you exit, the visa is no longer valid for re-entry.If you are issued a single-entry (O1) visa for a Schengen country, you are NOT permitted to transit through a non-Schengen State to reach another Schengen state.
Multiple-Entry Visa: Allows you to enter and exit the country multiple times within the visa’s validity period
Application Process: Applicants must submit their application to the consulate or embassy of the Schengen country where they plan to spend the most time. (except for business)

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
To be eligible for a Schengen Visa, applicants must have a valid passport with 2 to 3 blank pages with a 3-6 months validity from date of return, proof of sufficient financial means to support themselves during the stay. You need to provide a clear purpose for the visit, such as tourism, business, or family visits.
Travel Insurance including medical cover is required when travelling. It must cover the duration of the requested visa.

PROCESSING TIMES & VISA RECEIPT
No Schengen Countries offer an expedite service
The processing time for Schengen visas depends on each individual case. However, applicants should always apply minimum 15 working days before the intended journey.
Applications can be submitted up to 6 months prior to departure date and no earlier.
Non-South African Citizens have to apply 20-30 working days prior to the departure date.
