OVERVIEW
The UK Ancestry Visa allows Commonwealth citizens with a grandparent born in the UK, the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man to live and work in the UK. Here’s an overview of the application process and requirements:
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
1. Commonwealth Citizenship: Applicants must be citizens of a Commonwealth country.
2. Age: Applicants must be 17 years or older.
3. Ancestry: Applicants must have a grandparent born in the UK, the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man. This can be through a legitimate or illegitimate birth or through adoption.
4. Intentions: Applicants must plan to work in the UK.
5. Financial Independence: Applicants must be able to support themselves and any dependents without recourse to public funds.
6. Proof of Relationship: Applicants must provide evidence of their relationship to the grandparent (e.g., birth and marriage certificates).
APPLICATION FEE
The Home Office application fee for a UK ancestry visa is £637.
You will also be liable to pay an immigration health surcharge to be able to access the UK’s NHS. This is calculated on an annual basis, payable upfront, for the length of your visa.
TB Testing It is a requirement to show that you are free from TB if you are traveling to the UK and are applying for a visa which allows you to stay for more than 6 months at a time . TB testing is done through the IOM

PROCESSING TIMES & VISA RECEIPT
Having submitted your application and supporting documentation for a UK ancestry visa, and enrolled any biometric information, a decision will usually be made within 3 weeks.
After Receiving the Visa
- Validity: The UK Ancestry Visa is typically valid for five years.
- Work and Study: Visa holders can work, study, and bring family members (dependents) to the UK.
- Extension and Settlement: After five years, visa holders can apply to extend the visa or apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) if they meet the requirements.
